CHT Regional Council office comes under attack today

Santu Larma’s CHT Regional Council Office (CHTRC) came under attack today at around 11.15 am. He was at his office when 200/300 angry protesters belonging to Awami League and its front organisations brought his office under tremendous brick attacks from the main road. It continued for about 15 minutes and got damaged window glass panels and 2 jeeps of CHTRC got dents. Santu Larma’s brother-in-law, Mr. Mayamoy Dewan was hurt after getting a brick hit when he was at verandah on the first floor.

Police personnel who were present on the spot had been alert and army personnel rushed there and protected the CHTRC office. But brick bats continued like rain drops. The angry protesters who afterwards oraganised a protest meeting in front of DC office held Mr. Santu Larma and PCJSS responsible for the abduction of Mr. Anil Tanchangya (58). They gave 5.00 pm today as deadline for the release of Mr. Tanchangya.

Mr. Tanchangya, president, Krishak League, Rangamati district committee and vice president of Rangamati district committee, Awami League was heading towards Rangamati and his transport was stopped at 9.00 am and he was kidnapped by some armed persons from a point 2 km south of Ghagara Bazar on the Ghagara-Kaptai road. The area is controlled by pro-accord armed group loyal to Mr. Larma.

Mr. Sourendra Nath Chakraborty, DC and Mr. Masud- Ul- Hasan, SP called on Mr. Larma after the attack. The young Jumma youths soon after the brick attack went to the spot to challenge the attack of the Awami family members but they were prevented by the army and police personnel near the Sonali Bank court building branch. It has been gathered that Mr. Larma prevented a protest rally of the angry Jumma youths.

It is believed that the abduction was conducted for political and financial reasons. Mr. Tanchangya controls his area where (illegal) logging and road construction works are aggressively continuing and his open anti-PCJSS role is well known in the area. It is believed that he will not be kept in Ghagara area and might be shifted to eastern side of Kaptai lake (Kandya dojor area), for security of the abductors.  Mr. Ushatan Talukdar, Member, CHTRC visited the Rangamti Hill District Council Chairman, Mr. Nikhil Kumar Chakma at 10.30 am to discuss on the abduction.

Mr. Santu Larma is expected to depart Rangamati for Dhaka on 13th instant for meeting Dr. Gouhar Rizvi (Adviser to PM on Foreign Affairs) and Mr. Obaidul Quader, Communications Minister.
